MIL-PRF-38170H
3.5.12.2 Weight distribution. The tank assembly weight distribution shall be such that when the
fully loaded unit in parked on a level surface, with the lunette eye 15 inches above the ground,
not more than 85 pounds or less than 65 pounds force applied at the lunette eye will be required
to raise the landing gear clear of the supporting surface. In addition, the weight shall be
distributed to insure a downward force on the lunette eye throughout a vertical range of 10 to 30
inches above the ground (see 4.5.1, 4.5.14).
3.5.12.3 Storage attitude. The tank assembly shall be capable of being stored in a tilted position
(towbar end down) regardless of the level of fill with the front wheel retracted. A protective
bumper shall be provided if required to prevent damage to any component of the tank which may
result from repeated dropping of the towbar end while the tank is resting on the two main wheels
(see 4.5.1, 4.5.14).
3.5.12.4 Parking brakes. The tank assembly shall be provided with a two-wheel parking brake
system similar to automotive-type parking brakes. The control lever shall be located at the front
of the unit near the lunette eye (see 4.5.1).
3.5.12.5 Suspension. The tank shall be mounted solidly to the trailer chassis. A tire pressure,
not to exceed 15 psig, shall be selected to provide the necessary riding quality to prevent damage
to the tank or its accessories without the use of suspension springs (see 4.5.1).
3.5.12.6 Static discharge reel. A static discharge reel shall be provided on each tank assembly.
The reel shall have capability for latching of the cable at any extended length and shall have
automatic retraction. The cable shall have a length of 50 feet minimum and terminate with a
MIL-C-83413 grounding connector (see 4.5.1).
3.5.12.7 Hoisting and tiedown attachments. Tiedown devices that shall serve for both tiedown
and hoisting purposes shall be provided in accordance with (see MIL-HDBK-1791 for guidance).
These tiedown devices shall include four or more tiedown ring assemblies conforming to
drawing 48B7796. The tiedown devices shall permit hoisting, with a 3g acceleration force, of
the complete tank assembly filled to design capacity with liquid oxygen. The rings shall be
located on the tank assembly so that transportation personnel can easily rig safe slings from
common cable and spreader bar components for hoisting by a single-hook overhead crane (see
4.5.1, 4.5.6.3).
3.5.13 Reliability. The tank assembly shall have a mean time between failures (MTBF) of not
less than 21 servicing cycles at a 0.9 confidence level (see 4.5.17, 4.5.19).
3.5.14 Maintainability. Parts and assemblies shall be located and mounted to provide adequate
clearance for repair and other maintenance and, where practicable, to permit removal and
replacement of any part or assembly by removing or disconnecting only mounting bolts or
fasteners, panel doors, tubing, or control cables to the part or assembly being removed. The tank
assembly, where practicable, shall include readily detachable and attachable type fittings in the
liquid and vapor lines to permit rapid component removal and replacement. Disconnect points
shall be clearly indicated and identified. The design shall ensure operating clearance for
operation, servicing and maintenance at low ambient temperatures by personnel wearing heavy
