MIL-G-8968(ASG)
3.4.6 Sheet metal parts. - Sheet metal parts shall be of sufficient thickness,
rigidity, and strength to withstand any conditions which might be normally encountered
during transport, field positioning, leveling, service, and maintenance.
3.4.7 Insulation. - Thermal insulation used for the generating plant shall be
of the type that is not flammable and that is suitably protected against moisture ab-
sorption. The insulation shall be of such a texture that it can be readily removed.
and replaced by maintenance personnel in the field.
3.4.8 Gasketing and insulating materials. - Plastic, rubber-like, rubber, or
similar gasketing and insulating materials shall be compounded to insure their suit-
ability for the intended application, and, where applicable, their resistance to hydro-
carbons or low temperatures. Where polytetrafluoroethylene gasketing is used, this
material shall be impregnated.tith not less than 25 percent pulverized glass fiber
filler to improve its dimensional stability under compression. Packing, gaskets, seals,
and other nonmetallic components that come into contact with high purity oxygen shall be
compounded of materials compatible with use in oxygen atmosphere. They shall be suit-
able for use under all conditions to which they will be subjected and shall not ad-
versely be affected or deteriorated by continuous use in an oxygen or nitrogen atmospherE,
3.4.9 Rubber materials, - Rubber for components such as hoses, seals, and insu-
lators shall be compounded in accordance with MIL-R-3065.
3.4.10 Combustible materials. - Readily combustible materials shall not be used.
3.4.11 Material safety, - Materials shall not beevused iif the toxicof that material
use
olut on of
product detri-
under the conditions specified herein will cause an
mental to the health of the operating personnel or a product which may be classified
as corrosive, combustible, or explosive in an oxygen-enriched environment.
3.4.12 Low temperature service. - Materials subjected to cryogenic temperatures
(-361° F) shall have sufficient ductility and impact strength for the senice~ Carbon
steels shall not be used at cryogenic temperatuers.
3.4.13 Pine thread lubricant or sealant. - Tetrafluoroethylene tape conforming
to MIL-T-27730 shall be applied to threads prior to assembly of all pipe fittings
subject to contact by liquid or gaseous oxygen or nitrogen. The tape shall be applied
starting with the third thread to prevent contamination of the system.
3.4.14 Fungus-Proof materials. - Wherever practical, materials that are nutrients
for fungi shall not be used. Where used and not hermetically sealed, they shall be
treated with varnish conforming to MIL-V-173. However, if they are used in a her-
metically sealed enclosure, fungicidal treatment will not be necessary.
3.5 Design. -
3.5.1 General design. - The generating plant shall be a compact, lightweight,
unit complete in design for:
